DTBird & DTBat Installations

DTBird equips Ghoubet Wind Farm with bird & bat protection systems

DTBird and DTBat systems will be deployed at the Ghoubet Wind Farm, a 60 MW onshore wind project located in the Arta region of Djibouti and developed by Red Sea Power. The project represents a key milestone for both the country’s energy infrastructure and DTBird’s international expansion.

Project Overview: Ghoubet Wind Farm

The Ghoubet Wind Farm is a landmark renewable energy project for Djibouti and the wider Horn of Africa region.

  • The wind farm comprises seventeen Siemens Gamesa SG132 wind turbines, with a total installed capacity of 60 MW.

  • Each turbine has a rotor diameter of up to 150 meters and is located approximately 1 km west of Lake Ghoubet.

  • The project contributes to strengthening Djibouti’s energy infrastructure by providing a reliable and sustainable power source, supporting the country’s long-term renewable energy objectives.

Environmental integration has been considered from the early stages of project development, with dedicated monitoring systems incorporated to ensure the safe coexistence of wind energy production and local wildlife.

AI-Based Bird and Bat Protection at Ghoubet Wind Farm

To address environmental risks associated with wind energy infrastructure, DTBird FALCO and DTBat Q2 systems will be deployed across the Ghoubet Wind Farm site.

These AI-based solutions are designed to:

  • Monitor bird and bat activity in real time

  • Support collision risk mitigation strategies

  • Contribute to environmental compliance throughout the operational lifetime of the wind farm

Target bird species include the Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus) as well as migratory bird species. For bats, monitoring covers all species of interest present in the area.

Beyond collision risk mitigation, the deployment of DTBird and DTBat systems contributes to long-term environmental monitoring strategies. Data collected on bird and bat activity can support environmental impact assessments, adaptive management measures, and regulatory reporting, helping project developers and operators meet evolving environmental requirements.

Expanding Wind Energy into New and Emerging Markets

This installation marks DTBird’s first deployment in Africa, bringing the company’s technology to its 17th country of operation worldwide. It highlights how proven AI-based monitoring solutions can support the responsible expansion of wind energy into new and emerging markets.

As wind energy development accelerates globally, integrating biodiversity protection measures from the earliest stages of project design and operation is becoming increasingly essential. Solutions such as DTBird and DTBat help bridge the gap between renewable energy growth and environmental stewardship.

DTBird greatly appreciates Red Sea Power’s trust in its solutions and experienced know-how for this milestone project. The installation of the systems is planned for summer 2026.
