DTBat’s 11th anniversary!

A milestone for global bat protection technology

DTBat®‘s 11th anniversary marks an important milestone since the system was first installed in 2012 on a Wind Turbine Generator (WTG). Since then, DTBat® has evolved into a reliable and efficient solution to monitor bat activity and reduce operational risk at wind farms. Moreover, the system is now available for both onshore and offshore facilities worldwide.

DTBat® has already been installed in Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, Spain and the Netherlands, showing its versatility across different ecosystems and turbine configurations. In addition, the technology has supported developers, operators and environmental authorities in achieving better environmental performance.

Why automatic WTG shutdown is important

Bats are vulnerable to collisions with wind turbines, especially during periods of high activity or migration. Therefore, an automatic WTG shutdown triggered by bat activity thresholds is widely recognised as the most effective approach to protect bats while maintaining electricity production.

Furthermore, real-time monitoring ensures that turbine stops occur only when necessary, balancing biodiversity protection with operational efficiency. This capability is essential for wind farms operating under strict environmental conditions or regulatory requirements.

How DTBat® works

DTBat® includes two main modules:

  • Detection Module: Uses 1 to 3 ultrasound detectors configured to measure real-time bat activity and identify when thresholds are reached.

  • Stop Control Module: Automatically triggers the WTG stop signal when bat activity exceeds the defined levels.

These modules work together to provide accurate detection, immediate turbine response and complete traceability of events.

Data-based decisions through DTBat® online platform

The DTBat® online platform integrates flight records, thresholds, species information and shutdown events. As a result, users can analyse patterns, verify environmental compliance and review the behaviour of bats around turbines. The platform also offers advanced search filters and downloadable reports to support ongoing environmental management.

DTBat® continues to evolve, and after 11 years of operation, it remains a trusted system for wind farms seeking effective, automated and data-driven bat protection.
