DTBird® Publishes Technical Specifications for the Offshore ALBATROSS System

DTBird^® announces the publication of the technical specifications for the Offshore ALBATROSS system.

The DTBird^® ALBATROSS is an offshore bird-detection system designed for harsh marine conditions. It is available in seven configurations (A4, A6, A8, A10, A12, T2, and T4). As a result, projects can be tailored to rotor diameter, target species, and specific objectives such as monitoring, collision control, or mortality mitigation. Additionally, the system meets the demanding operational requirements of offshore operations.

Main features

• Marine-grade components: engineered for salt spray and temporary immersion, with UV and impact protection.
• Detection module: maximum range up to 800 m, with detectability graphics at any distance and >90% detectability for species such as northern gannets and kittiwakes.
• Night detection: VGA thermal cameras enable automatic bird detection in low-light and night conditions at sea.
• Wide coverage: 360° horizontal and up to 90° vertical coverage, with real-time detection of all bird sizes, including the rotor-swept area.
• Collision detectability: over 95% in videos.
• Deterrence module: automated sound emission (250–12,500 Hz). Its efficiency has been proven by independent onshore evaluations (REWI 2024; ECOCOM 2016).
  Moreover, triggers can be configured for daytime and nighttime high bird activity thresholds, as well as for forecast-based high activity periods.
• Stop module: automatically shuts down the wind turbine based on real-time collision risk evaluation, with four stop protocols ranging from basic to high protection. Additionally, an optional configuration is available for bird flight-activity thresholds.
• Data integration: compatible with wind-farm SCADA/PLC systems via multiple protocols.
• Data management: all events, videos, and operational data are stored and accessed through the DTBird^® NEST platform, with protected access and integrated analytics.
