DTBird consolidates its position as market leader of bird & bat monitoring & mortality mitigation systems for the Wind Energy sector. At the end of 2020, the company reached the 300^th unit installed since the technology was ready for commercialization back in Spain, 2009.

Along the way, third party companies continue to be trained to aid in the installation and maintenance of the systems worldwide. More than 40 DTBird and 5 DTBat units have been installed in Onshore projects across Europe throughout Q3 and Q4 2020.

The Data Analysis Platform (DAP) receives a fresh, new look. This version 2.0 provides a cleaner, User-Friendly interface. Some major upgrades include:

• Filtering of any time period: selection of bird flights/bat sonograms.
• Advanced Search feature:
  • Analyzed-Not analyzed flights/sonograms.
  • Analyzed bird flights/bat sonograms by species/groups.
• Higher image quality in videos.
• Control Manager Tab: Allows access to operational state of each Camera/ Detection Module.
• New graphics and figures in the automatic reporting tool.

DTBird DAP has already being used by local consultants, Bird & Bat protection NGO's and Authorities in several countries. 

DAP 2.0 for DTBird&DTBat systems

Despite the COVID-19 world pandemic, over 50 DTBird units have been installed in the first half of 2020. The units were installed on and offshore, throughout Europe and the USA.

The service of the DTBird & DTBat units; monitoring and reducing the mortality of birds and bats; has not stopped even during the quarantine periods. Although restrictions were placed on public and company’s personnel movements worldwide, DTBird & DTBat units continued operating at Wind Farms providing bird and bat smart transparent wind power.

DTBird Collision Avoidance Module with 10 speakers - D10 Model

A DTBirdV4N2 Model was installed at the beginning of June, on the "BlueSATH", a 1:6 scale prototype of a 10MW wind turbine using SATH floating technology at the Astander Shipyard located in Santander, Cantabria, Spain. It is comprised of 4 HD daylight cameras and 2 HD thermal cameras, provding 360º coverage of the Rotor Swept Area. The prototype will be finally installed in El Abra del Sardinero. The data gathered at the site will shed more light on the species' type, behaviour and activity patterns.

DTBird has already provided engineering technical support for the integration in 6 Offshore projects.

Since the beginning of 2019 all DTBird&DTBat modules have been tested to evaluate the fulfillment with the European Economic Area (EEA) regulations regarding safety, health, and environmental protection. At the end of 2019 an accredited laboratory has confirmed that DTBird&DTBat systems comply with these regulations and so, the CE Marking was granted. This is another step forward to internationally validating the product across the European region and further beyond.

DTBird&DTBat was invited as a Guest Speaker for the Symposium organized by the Flevoland Province, a Dutch Administration body, which took place on November 14th. The Symposium’s theme was on Onshore Wind Farms and Wildlife Interactions. Agustín Riopérez gave a presentation on the DTBird and DTBat features with a special focus on the systems’ operation in a Dutch Wind Farm.

DTBird has released a new software upgrade for the DTBirdV8 model that reduces the FP rate 80% without increasing bird collision risk. This means that the Wind turbines with DTBirdV8 installed will stop less frequently based on an object which is not a bird. Progressively, all DTBird operational units will be updated with the software upgrade.

DTBird&DTBat smart and transparent wind power continue growing in line with Liquen’s mission “Develop, manufacture and install technologies to make Wind Energy compatible with Wildlife preservation through automatic & real-time protection”.

The new DTBird&DTBat units installed in Asia, Europe and North America include onshore, near-shore and offshore projects.

Over 200 units installed in 14 countries - On&Offshore

This past August, DTBird & DTBat participated in the Conference on Wind energy and Wildlife impacts 2019 (CWW 2019) which took place on August 27^th - August 29^th in Stirling, Scotland. On the second day of the CWW, Agustín Riopérez participated in the Wind-wildlife technology workshop: considerations for integration at operational wind farms and lessons learned from wind farm operators, turbine OEMs, and technology developers. A strong focus was placed on data and operational transparency from a technological development perspective. Tools were proposed to encourage and promote further cooperation between all parties involved as well as to enhance the understanding of bird collision events. On the last day, DTBird gave a talk titled: Upgrades in offshore bird monitoring: from DTBirdV4 at Fino 1 to DTBirdV8N2 at Kincardine wind farm.

In the first quarter of the year, over 35 DTBird & DTBat units have been installed in France, Germany, Greece, The Netherlands and Spain. Over 50 additional units are expected to be installed in the Q2 - Q3 of 2019 in North America, Asia and Europe.
