DTBird® Publishes Independent Evaluation of Detection Distances for Its Bird Monitoring Models

DTBird® has released the results of an independent study evaluating the detection capabilities of its latest bird monitoring models (F4, A4, F6, A6, and T). The assessment, conducted by the company, used a controlled field methodology to objectively measure maximum and effective detection distances for each model, providing wind farm operators and environmental managers with transparent, verifiable performance data.

The evaluation involved controlled flights with a 1.42-meter wingspan avian-mimic drone, which simulated a medium-sized bird of prey. Flights were performed under stable weather conditions, covering a wide range of distances, angles, and trajectories. The drone’s GPS positions were synchronized with high-definition camera recordings from the DTBird® systems, allowing precise calculation of detection distances and probability curves.

Key findings include:

• Maximum detection distances up to 451 meters for certain models under optimal conditions.

• Consistently high detectability (>90%) at operationally relevant ranges, with differences in detection curves between wide-angle and narrow-angle configurations.

• Model-specific detection profiles to guide technology selection based on turbine location, target species, and environmental context.

"For years, the wind energy sector has sought independent, field-verified data on bird detection technologies," said a DTBird® spokesperson. "This study provides the transparency our clients need to make informed decisions, while reaffirming DTBird®’s commitment to bird protection for both onshore and offshore wind projects."

DTBird® Releases New Technical Specifications for Bat Protection in Wind Turbines

DTBird & DTBat has released an updated version of the Technical Specifications for the DTBat® system, a solution designed to detect, identify, and protect bats in wind farms. The new edition replaces the previous document published in 2016 and includes significant technical, operational, and installation upgrades.

For the first time, the document is available in a bilingual format (English and Español), reflecting the company’s international scope and commitment to making its systems more accessible for global wind energy projects, particularly in markets with increasing biodiversity regulations.

Over 40 DTBat® systems have been installed in several countries since the commercial launch in 2012. It integrates ultrasound detectors with multiple microphones, autonomous recording, real-time detection, and activity-informed smart curtailment. Its compatibility with SCADA systems and modular architecture makes it a flexible and effective solution for mitigating wind turbine impacts on bat populations.

Major advantages involve electricity production at times of low wind when bat activity is low or non-existent. It grants protection for species that have activity above the established wind value and that are only partially protected by the blanket curtailment protocol.

New upgrades include:

  • Automatic Species ID
  • No Shutdown False Positives
  • Robust hardware, offshore grade
  • Automatic and remote testing of microphones
  • Unique microphone housing and fixing for metal and concrete towers
  • New Online platform NEST with more statistics
  • Easy to play & view bat calls (.wav files)

DTBird & DTBat Presentation at DANI OIE 2025!

Our CEO, Agustín Riopérez has been invited to give a presentation on the DTBird & DTBat systems at Renewable Energy Sources of Croatia's event: DANI OIE 2025 in the Hotel Le Meridien Lav, Split, Croatia from May 21st - 23rd.

He has been invited to give a remote introductory presentation as part of Panel 8 - Developing RES While Preserving Nature and the Environment – Practice, Challenges, and Solutions. The panel will explore the feasibility of the existing protection measures in practice and the discrepancies between legislation, design, and implementation. Topics will include automated systems for birdlife protection for wind turbines, the use of ex-post appropriate assessment procedures, and the environmental impact of the revitalization of power plants. Special attention will be given to the concept of “acceleration areas” – zones that could enable faster RES development with reduced administrative burden and preservation of natural values.

We thank RES for the invitation!!

Bird repeller prototype project advances to Offshore testing phase!

We received great news at the end of last month of the DTBird Anti Bird Rest Prototype project extension from the ELBE Eurocluster Financial Support To Innovation Call: The project is set to end in June 2025.

The aim is to reduce the attractiveness of the floating platform to birds, so they avoid perching or nesting. Hence, the collision risk with the blades is reduced.

Throughout 2024, the team made up of Researcher/Ornithologist Adrián Fernández,  Researcher/Ornithologist Jorge Vallela, AI Software Engineers Jesús Campo & Andrés Baamonde, Head of Manufacturing/Installation Ramón Martín, CTO Javier Díaz and Project Manager Pablo Cos began with the ornithology and testing of various deterrent methods to proceed forward with the Onshore prototype design at our HQ in Madrid.

The prototype has been branded as “DTRepeller”!

For the remaining part of the project, the team aims to move to an Offshore environment to adapt the DTRepeller to a floating platform, manufacture, install, and test it!
